The challenges facing the University of Northern Canada included modernizing infrastructure to support state-of-the-art research and increasing teaching capacity. Challenges & Solutions

Fragmented IT Infrastructure Leading to Inefficient Resource Use: The university fractionalized its on-premise environment, making it difficult to scale efficiently and artificially prolonging research processing time.

  • Solution: Migration to Google Cloud enabled us to bring everything under GCP’s highly scalable infrastructure. Using Google Compute Engine and Kubernetes Engine allowed the university to dynamically allocate resources for research projects and administrative needs, ensuring optimal performance.

Slow Processing of Large Research Data Sets: The university’s research teams often struggled with slow data processing, which limited the potential of their projects and innovation.

  • Solution: Google BigQuery was integrated to handle large-scale data processing. Researchers could now analyze massive datasets in minutes, significantly speeding up research outputs and data-driven insights, thereby empowering cutting-edge studies.

Disjointed Collaboration Among Faculty and Students: The university needed a more cohesive digital environment to foster collaboration in teaching and research. Traditional systems were slow and disconnected, resulting in delays.

  • Solution: Instead, we implemented Google Workspace for Education to collaborate across all locations in real-time. Having different Google tools like Google Drive, Google Meet, and Google Docs at their disposal, communication and file sharing between faculty and students have become more productive. Besides, they now easily collaborate and conduct meetings to work together on any project.

High IT Costs with Limited Flexibility for Scaling: The university was spending large amounts to continue running physical servers and legacy IT systems to manage the fluctuating needs, as scaling up this way is difficult.

  • Solution: The university drastically cut infrastructure costs through Google Cloud’s pay-as-you-go model but could scale on demand. This also helped take the doctors of work from IT differently, allowing them to work on more important things.
